Ryder Goals Secures A Point For Reserves

by Peter Scherer

Mickleover Reserves earned a well-deserved point last Saturday, when they faced Central Midlands League Premier Division rivals Teversal.

Sports started the stronger of the two sides, as Charlie Rock, Jack Leighton and Declan Brown combined after a corner, with the final effort just wide.

Fin Ryder then charged through to cross, but there was no one in the middle, but a few minutes later he was in the action again, on the end of a 20 plus pass build up, before the visitors keeper saved his shot.

Brown was next to burst through the defence. He was met by the advancing keeper, diving at the young strikers feet, before the defence recovered and cleared the danger.

Teversal gradually started to get into the game more, but it was Brown causing problems for the defence again. He went one on one with the keeper, but his shot was just wide.

After lots of promise the opening goal finally arrived, after a Leighton charge down the right. His cross caused confusion between the keeper and a defender, and Ryder collected to make it 1-0.

Brown managed to set up Sam Harrison for another shot before half time, but his powerful effort was over the bar.

Teversal came out for the second half with all guns blazing. They hit the post, before home keeper Tom Bill claimed it after visitors third attempt, before an unmarked striker hit the bar shortly afterwards.

Bill had saved a free kick,  but it wasn’t long before Teversal were back on equal terms, after a cross fell out of Rock’s reach and landed nicely for the visitors to hit it home 1-1.

There was one more chance for Mickleover before the final whistle, when Dean Ironmonger, who had subbed for Brown, broke through the defence, but his shot lacked power to trouble the keeper.

The point put Mickleover into third place in the table, three points behind Teversal, but with two games in hand. They are at home next week too when they face Wirksworth Ivanhoe, who are currently 13th.
