Our New Opponents For 26/27: Part One

by Peter Scherer

Although we will be continuing in the Northern Premier Midlands Division One for the forthcoming season, we will be facing six new teams due to promotions and relegations.

Three are familiar to us and three are less known, so first of all we will introduce you to the latter.

Boston Town, the Poachers, were United Counties League Premier Champions and this year will be their first time at step 4.

Matt Cotton was their star player, missing just one game all season, he scored 34 league and cup goals and was the Players Player of the Year. He joined the club in February 2025 from Lincoln Utd.

Manager Chris Funnell had been in charge since October 2024 and was previously at Lincoln Utd. He is assisted by coach Matt Easton and player coach Kallum Smith

Their home ground the Mortgages For You Stadium at Tattershall Road, has a 6,000 capacity including 450 seated and the pitch is grass.

Former Rams striker Bill Curry also played and managed the club back in the late sixties and early seventies.

They were formed in 1964 by former Boston Utd officials, originally as Boston FC and their record attendance was in 1970, when they played Boston Utd in an FA Cup qualifying round with a 2,700 gate. They also reached the FA Cup first round proper in 76/77 losing 3-1 at Barnsley.
