Ashton is a former Sheffield Utd Academy centre back, who started his career at Matlock Town. During his spell with the Blades he was loaned to Guiseley, but after his release he returned to Matlock.

After spells at Sheffield FC and Grantham he spent the 23/24 season at Stamford, before starting last term at Rushall Olympic. After three months he returned to Stamford, where he saw out the rest of the season.
