Mickleover Sports Academy Crowned Champions (Again)

The Northern Premier League Academy League season is drawing to a close with Sports once again having great success. Sports have provided the champions for the last two seasons and last night the first-year team  continued the dominance with a 1-0 win over Matlock Town’s 2nd Years.

Sports First Years (Blacks), who were winners of the Chryso Division and qualified for the Final , played at Leek Town, against the winners of the Joma Division, Matlock Town Second Year team. Sports were crowned as overall Champions after a close fought 1-0 win, courtesy of a Morgan Williams goal in the closing minutes.

This capped a great couple of weeks for the team for having won their League they also came out winners of the 7-a-side competition without conceding a goal.

They now have one more competition to concentrate on, the League Cup. Having reached the semi final after wins over Belper Town an Hednesford Town they have a semi final against last nights opponents to see who can reach a final that is to be played at Stoke City’s Britannia Stadium on May 28th.

Sports Red team (second years), despite winning 3-0 at Matlock last week finished second in their League with two earlier defeats with a depleted team, costing them a possible League win. They were knocked out of the League Cup after two close games against Matlock Town

Not only have the team had success but individually there have been honours for both teams.

Lewis Belgrave was voted NPLFA player of the year, with Jake Dickinson in 3rd place and Lewis, Jake plus Morgan Williams and Manzoor Amiri were chosen in the NPLFA team of the season.

Also take into account that several lads have made their debuts in the First team during this season shows that Academy Coaches, John McGrath and Andy Dales have done an excellent job

John McGrath said:

“As first team manager and head of our outstanding academy I was delighted with how we played. We tried to mirror how the first team play by making sure football was played in the right manner. What makes it extra special is the fact our boys are only first year scholars and some giving up two years to their older counterparts.  I see big futures for some of these kids and it won’t be long before we see a few more debutants coming through to play in our first team. Special mention goes to Jake Smith who I thought had an outstanding game in midfield. He was the best player on the park all night.”

In Memoriam – Karl Payne

It is with much sadness that  the club can confirm the death of former player Karl Payne at the age of 44.

Karl was an apprentice at Chesterfield FC before moving on to play for a number of non league sides in the local area, including Gresley FC, Belper Town, Stapenhill FC, and Ashby Ivanhoe FC as well as Mickleover Sports, though he is probably best known for his spell at Burton Albion before they attained Football League status.

A keen cyclist, Karl collapsed and died during a 110 mile charity bike ride from Stoke to North Wales and back.

According to the Derby Telegraph Mr Payne, who lived in Burton, was employed as an operations manager at a construction company at the time of his death.
Sports would to pass on their condolences to his family.

6 From 6 For Sports Over Happy Easter Weekend

Sports recorded back-to-back victories over the Easter weekend meaning a finishing league position of 16th is almost certain.

Saturday saw Sports beat Barwell at the Don Amott Arena, 4-1, with goals from Abalimba (1), Baskerville (2), and Hall (1) before beating Ilkeston FC at the New Manor Ground on Monday following an own goal by Ilkeston’s Max Thornberry.

With the final match of the season at home to Frickley Athletic on Saturday, the 2016/17 season will go down as good progress for the club following the relegation battle of last season. In addition, the team has had a much more settled look about it compared to last season with considerable off-pitch process being made too.

Finally, the annual end of season presentation evening is taking place immediately after Saturday’s match at 6pm. It is free to everybody and absolutely everybody is welcome to join us to celebrate the end of a good season.

See you there and thank you for your support once more.

Mickleover Sports FC – Survival Confirmed

Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Marine means that Sports are now mathematically safe from relegation in the Northern Premier League Premier Division – with 4 games left to play!

Screen Shot 2017-04-10 at 11.11.16

The victory was the second in a week and has cemented Sports position as an established Premier Division team.

This follows on from the recent club news that has confirmed that the structure of the Sports club will change into a Community Interest Company (CIC) which will result in improvements to facilities and ultimately to the playing budget for the senior football team.

Exciting times lie ahead and we would like to once again thank supported, sponsors, volunteers, and everybody else at the Sports club for your help and support.
