Sports complete Modest signing

Mickleover Sports are proud to announce the signing of Nathan Modest. Nathan started his career at Sheffield Wednesday where he graduated from the academy to sign a 2 year professional contract. He made his first team debut at 17 and played a number of games for the first team.

After leaving Sheffield Wednesday, Nathan went on loan to Darlington FC and has since played for Gloucester City, Hednesford Town, Telford AFC, Worksop and last season he played for Bridlington FC scoring 17 goals.

I am really excited to be here and I feel like Mickleover is a great club which plays football the right way and is moving in the right direction.

I’m here to achieve great things with this club and I think with the squad the gaffer is putting together we can have a really good season and push for that promotion.

I am really looking forward to getting started.

Nathan Modest

I am delighted to announce the signing of Nathan Modest for the upcoming 19/20 season. He’s a player that will add undoubted quality and with his experience of playing football at higher levels that will only benefit us as a football team. He is a player who is lightning quick with a keen eye for goal and will add something different to our attacking line this season. Welcome to Mickleover Sports Nathan.

A Loss and a Win for Sports in Midweek Double Header

On a beautiful summer’s evening, Sports’ bounce back from a 2-0 loss to Telford on Tuesday night with a 2-0 win against Burton Albion XI last night (Weds 24th July).

Match report from Sports v Burton by Ian Hawkins…

MICKLEOVER Sports took home the KC Trophy with a 2-0 victory over a young Burton Albion XI at the Don Amott Arena thanks to first half goals from Nathan Modeste and Jack Smith.

Sports grabbed the lead after just two minutes when the imposing figure of their triallist, wearing the number eleven shirt, got up well to meet a cross and head it into the path of MODESTE who made no mistake from eight yards.

Albion’s young guns were playing some nice passing football and triallist linked up well with Ethan Vale before finding Jack Holmes on the right, his low cross, inadvertently deflected behind by Sports Tom Eccleshall.

Sports almost doubled their lead on 25 minutes when a direct ball over the top picked out the run of Jack Smith but Callum Hawkins was smartly off his line to block with his leg. And the young Brewers keeper was quickly out to block Modeste at close quarters as the striker showed good pace to get away from Rueben Lal.

Three minutes before the break it was the home side who got the vital goal to give them a 2-0 advantage when SMITH rose to powerfully head home a corner.

Half time: Mickleover Sports 2-0 Burton Albion XI

Albion made two changes for the second half with Jack Livesey taking over in goal from Callum Hawkins and Ben McClean coming on for Ben Hart who played a significant role in Tuesday’s game at Solihull as well.

And a third change saw Ben Radcliffe replace Luke Redfern at right back eight minutes after the restart. The fresh legs of Albion were certainly seeing more of the ball and both Manny Shittu and Yewo Nyirenda added more pace and power in the attacking areas. Young defender McClean did superbly well to slide in and make a timely challenge on Sports substitute striker Tomas Junek as he looked to get a shot away and Livesey’s goal was under threat again when James Cadman got away a sharp strike that just went wide of the post.

Livesey was forced into meaningful action moments later when Cadman again found himself in space with room to shoot and the young Scot spread himself well to block the shot at fairly close quarters.
Shittu went closest to getting Albion back into the game with a effort from range that the Mickleover keeper could only push against his own crossbar with nobody in a yellow shirt able to make ground into the penalty area to capitalise on the rebound.

Adam Prusa went close to adding a third for Sports late on but Livesey showed good hands to hold on to his rising drive at the first time of asking but neither side could find a goal to end the game on a high with Sports Tyreece Robinson eventually lifting the trophy at the end of the game.

BetVictor sponsors the Isthmian, Northern Premier and Southern Leagues

The National League System’s ‘big three’ feeder leagues are celebrating a new two-year sponsorship deal with leading online gambling company BetVictor, starting from season 2019/20.

It’s the first time that a single brand takes on the title sponsorship of every Step 3 and 4 competition. Like many contemporary sports sponsorships, BetVictor’s focus is on digital and social media, with each league’s website being refreshed and new content added.

The new BetVictor sponsorship will bring a remarkable level of new investment into each competition, underpinning BetVictor’s commitment to supporting the game and to strengthen its digital presence through unique collaborations and campaigns.

In a joint statement, Nick Robinson – Isthmian Football League Chairman, Mark Harris – Northern Premier League Chairman and Terry Barratt – Southern League Chair, said:

We are delighted to be working with BetVictor, such a high-profile sponsor. It is a major coup for the leagues at the Steps 3 and 4 of the National Leagues System. By working collectively, we become a much more attractive commercial and media proposition. We are all striving to professionalise our competitions and this sponsorship takes things to a new level.

Commenting on the partnership, BetVictor’s Director of Brand and Creative, Matt Parkes stated:

We’re very excited about this partnership and we’re confident it will be a successful one for all three leagues and for BetVictor. The growing popularity of the leagues amongst the football community in the UK gives us the opportunity to amplify our brand’s digital presence and engagement, and to get closer to the leagues’ football fans.

The players’ shirt sleeves at 228 clubs part of all three leagues will also carry the BetVictor logo.

Experienced Centre Back signs for Sports

Mickleover Sports have made another really important signing. The very experienced left footed centre back Greg Young. Whose previous clubs include:

  • Sheffield Wednesday
  • Grimsby Town
  • Halifax Town
  • Altrincham
  • York City
  • Gainsbrough Trinity
  • Buxton FC

I am delighted to be joining such a well established club as Mickleover Sports. Having been here as an opposition player on many occasions I am well aware of the quality of football that the team is encouraged to play. As soon as I was approached by the manager John McGrath I was immeditaely excited about joining and it was an easy decision to sign. I know the league well and what it takes to be successful and I am looking forward to working with the staff and players to help the club make further progression.

Grey Young

With a back line already consisting of Durrell Berry, Pablo Mills and Ben Turner my recruitment was to find a centre half who would seamlessly fit in to that already experienced defensive unit. I was delighted to get Greg’s signature and to get this signing over the line is a massive statement of intent from us as a club. He is a player of vast experience and will forge a formidable partnership with fellow centre back Pablo Mills. He is renowned for his aggression but he also possesses a very talented left foot and is comfortable in possession which really suits our style of play and he will give natural balance down that left side with Ben Turner. Welcome to Sports Greg.

Sports retain defensive gem Berry

Sports are over the moon to have retained another outstanding performer in Durrell Berry, who gives his all, week in, week out.

I’m delighted to sign for another season with Sports.

Last season was a tough one for all involved at the club, which I feel we should never have been in the situaton we found ourselves at the end of the season, but that’s gone now and I look forward a new season and most definitely pushing for promotion with the squad the gaffer is looking to build.

It was easy for me stay for another season not just because it suits me location wise but the way the manager works and likes us to play football is by far the most enjoyable, challenging and rewarding way to work and play football.

Durrell Berry

An absolute gem of a player to work with. Should still be playing league football in my opinion and is he a massive coup for our club Mickleover Sports.
Durrell joined us mid season last year and was instrumental in our league survival. Equally comfortable at right back or centre back I have not seen or played with a better 1 v 1 defender in my 20 year career. I am absolutely delighted to have retained Durrell for the upcoming season.

Talented youngster Jack Smith signs for Sports

Sports are extremely excited to sign Jack Smith. Jack signed for Guiseley Academy on a scholarship at 16 years old and then went on to sign for Goole AFC. Having a strong season at Goole prompted then National Conference North club North Ferriby to snatch up the talented young utility player. He played the majority of games during the 18/19 season with North Ferriby until the unfortunate events of the club going in to liquidation.

Jack fits the mould of young talented players that we look for here at Mickleover Sports. He had an unfortunate season last year whilst at North Ferriby but Jack never once ‘downed tools’. He fought for Ferriby until the club went in to liquidation and it’s this strength in character that makes him a great signing. Welcome to Sports Jack.

John McGrath, First Team Manager

I’m delighted to have signed for Mickleover, John has made it clear the ambitions of the club this season and I couldn’t turn down the offer to play. I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead and I can’t wait to get started.
