Four In A Row As Hat-trick Hero Beavon Seals Another Three Points: Radcliffe (H)

by Peter Scherer

Despite the frustration of having the last two games postponed, Mickleover rose to the occasion to make it four wins out of four so far in 2022, with a 4-1 win over Radcliffe.

Starting line-up: 1-Jonathan Hedge 2-Ben Radcliffe 3-Rhys Dolan 4-Phil Watt 5-Pablo Mills 6-Kemy Agustien 7-Lian Ravenhill 8-Mason Warren 9-Callum Niven 10-Stuart Beavon 11-AndyDales. Subs: Andrew Wright, George Milner, Jahvan Davidson-Miller, Jake Scott, James Butler.

In the opening few minutes Radcliffe were on the attack and Gribben almost broke through for the visitors after five minutes, but managed to earn a corner.

But as Sports started to open up, Beavon had a good run two minutes later and fired in a shot saved by keeper Belford, but it was a sign of things to come.

10 minutes in and Dales found Beavon again and his shot from outside the box found Belford’s bottom right hand corner, 1-0.

Radcliffe continued to push forward, now seeking an equaliser, with Crothers shooting over the bar from the kick off.

Hall looked threatening at times for the visitors too, but was tending to outrun the ball when it counted, but after 17 minutes Gribben had a good chance. His weak finish failing to trouble Hedge in the Mickleover goal however.

Returned loanee Ravenhill was looking particularly sharp on the right and with Warren’s tenacity and Agustien’s calm exterior, the Mickleover midfield began to take control and provide good feed to Dales, Niven and Beavon up front.

20 minutes and another Dales and Beavon play proved positive. As Beavon slipped the ball back to Dales, he sent a powerful shot into the top right hand corner, with Belford well beaten again, 2-0.

Dales was looking for his second only four minutes later, but successful with pace he couldn’t get a clear shot on goal.

Skipper Watt and the experience of Mills had successfully kept Radcliffe at bay and allowed both Radcliffe and Dolan the chances to work well on the overlaps.

Radcliffe player manager Bobby Grant was doing his best to motivate his side and led by example, but his 26th minute effort was easily taken by Hedge.

Just after the first half four Dolan continued his charge down the left to try his luck on goal, with a good effort just over right hand upright.

The visitors continued to look dangerous at times but Gribben wanted too much time, but his loss found Grant again whose 34th minute effort was well saved by Hedge.

Grant found Hall again a few minutes later, but it was a poor finish from the Radcliffe striker as they continued on the attack, with far too many crosses too close to Hedge who collected easily.

With only two minutes left on the lock until half time Dolan shot down the wing again and his precision pass found Beavon who comfortably made it 3-0.

Mills had taken a knock earlier and was replaced by Butler as the teams came out for the second half.

It started well again with Dales charging through the defence, chipping the oncoming Belford, only to see his shot go just over the bar.

It was the visitors pushing forward though as Mickleover absorbed the pressure. Gribben put a good cross into the box after 54 minutes, but there was no one on the receiving end and five minutes later he tried again with a shot over the bar.

But the Mickleover defence was really under pressure with Butler and Watt heading away a number of balls into the box.

Davidson-Miller came on for Niven after 65 minutes, but shortly afterwards Radcliffe pulled one goal back. Navarro’s effort had come back off the post but Grant was on hand to pick up the rebound, 3-1.

Wright was then on for Agustien, but as the visitors pushed even further forward, any Mickleover attacks were caught offside.

Radcliffe sub Akpro got a break after 72 minutes, but shot wide from outside the box. The pressure was finally relieved though when Warren split the defence and found Beavon again, who just picked his spot and placed it home to make it 4-1 and secure his personal hattrick.

From the restart Beavon almost got Wright through again, but with 10 minutes left Hedge was called into action again palming away a Baxter free kick that was heading for the top corner.

In the closing minutes Wright fed Davidson-Miller who found his path blocked and Wright had a shot blocked too shortly afterwards.

But the visitors kept fighting to the final whistle and Hedge had to make an 85th minute save from a Grant header, but the result was a proud 4-1 win for Mickleover.

“My confidence was already coming back after the goal at Nantwich, but after a hattrick I’m buzzing now,” concluded three goal star Stuart Beavon, as we now look forward to Tuesday’s game against South Shields.

Junior Journo: Atwal And Barker Double Up As Reserves Hit Five!

by Tom Alston

Ashland 1-5 Mickleover Reserves

Mickleover reserves continue their spectacular form with a comfortable 5-1 away win against Ashland Rovers in the Central Midlands League Premier Division.

An impressive brace from both George Atwal and Fin Barker all but completed a dominant display by the Sports reserves with Freddie Murphy coming off the bench to join to duo on the scoresheet.

The match begun with Atwal looking to catch the Ashland goalkeeper off guard from the kick-off. His audacious attempt from the centre circle narrowly arched over the bar with the ‘keeper back peddling. A sign of things to come for the reserves number four who had his eye in for goal.

Only minutes later Atwal came close again. From deep on the right-hand side, he curled a dangerous left-footed freekick goalward. The goalkeeper once again had to react quickly and punched the ball out of the box.

Mickleover begun to bombard the home side with flurries of attacking opportunities. Jude Ayetine was next to have an attempt at the Ashland goal. Jacob Edge-Lucas received a brilliant floated ball down the line by Atwal. The fullback opened up space for himself and clipped a ball from the right onto the head of Ayetine. To the number ten’s misfortunes his headed attempt at goal spun narrowly wide of the far-left post.

Barker looked to open up the scoring for the away side but mis-hit a left footed effort and saw his shot sail over the goal. He had worked himself into a brilliant position in the centre of the penalty area after jinxing his way in from the right.

Ashland Rovers looked to respond to the plethora of Mickleover attacks with one of their own. A free kick from the left curled towards the far-right post but proved no problem for Fin Bowen who watched the attempt whip out for a goal kick.

Having tried his luck earlier on, Atwal opened the scoring on the 20-minute mark. He picked the ball up centrally outside the area, put his head down and drilled a low driven shot towards goal. His attempt arrowed into the bottom right corner and was out of reach for the diving goalkeeper.

Ten minutes later Mickleover doubled their lead through Barker. Devon Smith found himself on the right wing and delivered an in-swinging cross into the box. The goalkeeper reacted well and met the ball, however he fumbled it leaving it to fall to the feet of Barker who tapped in to earn his first of the match.

Mickleover finished the half with Barker getting his brace in an excellent move. Atwal played a perfectly weighted pass from the centre of the park, splitting through the defence and travelling into the path of Barker. With the ‘keeper looking to beat him to the ball Barker delicately chipped the ball up and over into an unmanned net.

The second half saw more of the Mickleover dominance with the away team controlling possession. Freddie Murphy came on for Smith in the 70th minute and two minutes later he made his mark on the game with a goal. Edge-Lucas drilled a low ball across the area towards the far post. With a couple of mis-hits the ball landed at Murphy’s feet who tapped in from close range to make it four.

Rovers were not out of the game just yet, winning a corner on the right-hand side they delivered an out-swinging ball targeted for the penalty spot. Their captain rose above the rest and delivered a towering header low into the ground to deny Bowen a clean sheet.

Mickleover Reserves finished their match with Atwal earning his brace, when the Ashland goalkeeper came out of his area to clear to ball. His clearance fell to the feet of Atwal on the halfway line and without hesitation he launched a strike. His effort sailed over a stranded goalkeeper and nestled into the open net rewarding  the reserve side with a 5-1 victory, continuing their magnificent league form.

Starting line-up: Fin Bowen, Jacob Edge-Lucas, Will Robinson, George Atwal, Ethan Mann, Cam Anthony (Sam Groves 68’), Lewis Benjamin (Ben Lewin 68’), Ben Horleston, Devon Smith (Freddie Murphy 70’), Jude Ayetine, Fin Barker Unused sub: Josh Satchwell.

A Great Cause in Memory of a Great Man

Dear All,

Keith Loring was a loving husband to our beautiful mum Lesley and a brilliant dad to Katie & I. We lost him to cancer in December last year after a brave fight till the very end and miss him so much.

We would like to honour Keith’s final wishes of completing and publishing the book he was writing, covering his professional career in football and to get our father’s ashes to his favourite spot in the Algarve.

As a family, we would also like to place a memorial bench in our father’s honour next to the lake in Alvaston Park, where he just loved to walk and relax. Any money remaining, we will donate to Keith’s favourite charities, The Royal British Legion and Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre.

To raise money, I am walking of behalf my mother and sister, just over 270 miles, the equivalent of covering Keith’s journey from Cambridge Utd Football Club, to Brentford Football Club, to Derby County Football Club, to Derbyshire County Cricket Club, to Leicester City Football Club and finally to Mickleover Football Club. According to Google, to do it continuously, it should take around seven weeks, at a rate of 10,000 steps per day, with a final total of well over 500,000 steps. We will update daily my distanced walked and keep you informed of the progress made.

Keith wasn’t just our dad, he was a pillar of the community wherever he went, believing in the power of community and charity, and working tirelessly to help people.

Since Keith passed away, we have been truly touched by the messages we have had and seeing how much dad was loved, respected, how he inspired, mentored and affected so many along the way, with his selfless attitude and generosity throughout his life has been overwhelming.

If you would like to help us achieve Keith’s final wishes and support the charities he loved please click on the link below and follow the instructions to donate.

Bobby’s Off To Gib

by Peter Scherer

It was a double celebration for young Mickleover midfielder Bobby Battisson this week.

As well as having his 18th birthday on Monday, he also signed his first professional contract with Europa FC, one of the top clubs in the Gibraltar league.

I came out first for a weeks trial and they said they wanted to sign me. The transfer deadline was the same day as my birthday and it seemed to be going on and on day by day.

said Bobby.

His agent Gino Culbertson finally completed the negotiations and a one-year contract was completed.

It hasn’t really sunk in yet, I have to wait for the excitement to calm down. I now have to come back to the UK, pack my things and fly back on Friday, exchanging Burton on Trent for the mediterranean.

There is a game on Sunday, but I don’t expect to be playing that soon. There is also a rule here where each team has to have five Gibraltarians in the team, so I will have to earn my place.

He will be sharing an apartment with another new signing, just across the border in La Linea.

There is a chance of Europa League, Champions League football but I have to work hard and train hard.

I just want to thank everyone who has helped me get this far, especially John and the team at Mickleover, Gino, my Dad and my Mum who is coming back out with me to settle me in the apartment.

Bobby was part of last seasons Regional and National Academy Championship winning team as well as breaking into the first team squad.

Jake’s On The Mend

by Peter Scherer

Mickleover’s attacking wing back Jake Bennett is looking at his road to recovery, following a recent cartilage operation.

I’m doing OK and the knee is already starting to feel better, as I had my stitches out on Wednesday, but I can’t walk for four weeks and then it’s crutches,

he said.

I’ve been lying in bed watching TV, and seen nearly everything that Netflix has to offer.

I knew my knee wasn’t right though, I have played through some injuries, but when they checked, part of the cartilage was missing.

It’s not the first time Jake has been sidelined with a serious leg injury, he was out of action for a long spell during his time with Sheffield Utd.

That was the same leg but a different injury, but I just want to be playing.

Once he is mobile again he hopes to get along to the games again as a reluctant spectator.

I don’t know exactly how the mobility plan will work, but once I am up and about Jake our physio will sort a rehabilitation programme out for me.
